Spare the environment – choose your transport – show your values

Here are some facts about what our freight trains saved the environment in 2009 compared to sending the freight by road. With CargoNet as your carrier, you can do your bit for the environment.

The diagram shows*): The freight we carried by rail reduced energy consumption by an average of 82 %, CO2 emissions by more than 94 % and NOx-emissions by 86 % in comparison with transport of the same freight by road. The diagram shows*): The freight we carried by rail reduced energy consumption by an average of 82 %, CO2 emissions by more than 94 % and NOx-emissions by 86 % in comparison with transport of the same freight by road.

In 2009, CargoNet relieved the roads in Norway and Sweden of more than 977 articulated Lorries every day, throughout the year. Our transport activities are lenient on the environment. In socio-economic terms, this reduction means a reduction in deaths and injuries on the roads as well as better accessibility.

Good transport conditions for trade and industry are vital to competitiveness and productivity, although transport does contribute to:

  • The greenhouse effect, which is threatening the climate, particularly because of CO2 emissions
  • Acidification of the environment and increased health risks due to emissions of sulphur, nitrogen dioxides (NOx) and other pollutants

Increased consumption therefore imposes tremendous demands on transport quality and transport efficiency. Therefore, when you choose your form of transport you also make an important environmental decision.

The menu on the left shows the facts about environmental savings in 2009. Here you will also find a page of external links to an environment calculator and pages, which deal with environmental pollution and energy.

*) Our calculation assumes that the alternative form of freight transport is by road on 40-tonne articulated lorries/semi-trailers with EURO 4 power units. Transport activity shows actual shipments in Norway and Sweden in 2009. Lifting at both ends of the rail link is included, as is a short distance to cover collection and delivery of freight. Calculations by Ecotransit’s environment calculator.
