Climate gas (CO2 ) emissions in Norway reduced by more than 210,00 tonnes

Our freight shipments accounted for an average of approx. 7 % of climate gas CO2 emissions compared to 100 % if the same amount of freight had been sent by road. This is important, considering that transport accounts for about 29 % of all CO2 emissions.

The diagram shows*): CargoNet’s freight trains running in Norway spared the environment the emission of more than 210,000 tonnes of the climate gas CO2 compared to the same amount of freight if it were carried by road. This was equivalent to around 93 % "saved" CO2 pollution. The diagram shows*): CargoNet’s freight trains running in Norway spared the environment the emission of more than 210,000 tonnes of the climate gas CO2 compared to the same amount of freight if it were carried by road. Since mankind began using fossil fuels the atmosphere’s content of the climate gas CO2 has increased by over 25%. The average temperature on earth has also risen during the same period and the greenhouse effect, which threatens our climate, has become a familiar concept.

The transport sector alone is responsible for 29 per cent of today’s climate gas emissions - a share which is increasing.

Choosing an environmentally friendly form of transport increases your company's credibility and professionalism. Environmental protection is in itself a competitive factor and as such it can open new markets to your company. You will find links to further information on climate and pollution here.

*) Our calculation assumes that the alternative form of freight transport is by 40-tonne articulated lorry or semi-trailer. All the lorries are assumed to have EURO 4 power units. Rail transport activity is based on CargoNet's actual shipments in Norway during the whole of 2009. Lifting at both ends of the rail link is included, as is a short distance to cover collection and delivery of freight to/from the terminals. The calculations were done using Ecotransit’s environment calculator.
